About Guo Pei
After a decade working in ready-to-wear, Guo Pei founded Rose Studio in 1997. Her official biography describes selecting and training artisans, including embroiderers and patternmakers, whose skills give elaborate surfaces and structures their physical form. Rihanna’s golden-yellow gown at the 2015 Met Gala introduced this established practice to a wider international audience.
The spring 2017 collection, Legend, is a later chapter in that career. A visit to the cathedral of St. Gallen and European ceremonial dress informed its imagery; collaboration with textile maker Jakob Schlaepfer supported the special fabrics. These particular references sit alongside the longer importance of Chinese art and craft to her work.
