Hanae Mori built an international career connecting Japanese textiles and imagery with Western dress. After her New York breakthrough in 1965, she established her Paris couture house in 1977.

The spring/summer 1983 silk evening dress places blossoms and broad bands of color across a flowing silhouette. It entered the museum as a gift of collector Mary Griggs Burke in 1996.
