The V&A identifies the skirt as part of a Fashion Rave outfit. The jacket and skirt are recorded as 1994 remakes of 1990 designs; the trainers are customized Converse shoes. This museum presentation demonstrates Özbek’s response to dance culture, combining a short silhouette, a sparkling jacket and embellished trainers. It is a documented designer interpretation, not a reconstruction of a typical rave attendee’s wardrobe.

About Rifat Özbek
His clothes mixed embroidery and references to different dress traditions with modern silhouettes; he received British Designer of the Year awards in 1988 and 1992.
