Lanvin’s wide skirts offered another route through 1920s evening fashion. A low waist joined historical volume to the decoration and shorter lengths of the decade.

About Robe de style

The robe de style was a recognized alternative to the narrow flapper silhouette. Most closely associated with Jeanne Lanvin, it combined a relatively low waist with a wide skirt, sometimes supported by small side hoops. Its historical references recalled eighteenth-century dress, but shorter lengths and modern fabrics placed it firmly in the 1920s. Embroidery, ribbonwork and carefully chosen colors gave the evening dresses distinction.
