About Sportswear
Sport helped change everyday dressing in the 1920s. Tennis clothes, sweaters and coordinated separates offered ease of movement and a more informal appearance. Gabrielle Chanel and Jean Patou helped bring those qualities into fashionable wardrobes beyond the playing field. Jersey and other knitted fabrics were especially useful, but sportswear was also an approach to dressing: practical pieces, uncomplicated shapes and clothes suited to active modern lives. It did not mean that every garment was made for competitive sport.
