New Look

Dior’s 1947 debut rebuilt fashionable proportions around a sharply shaped waist. The abundance of its most famous skirts attracted admiration and resistance in a rationed world.

About New Look

Christian Dior’s first collection, shown on 12 February 1947, prompted Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow to name the New Look. Sloping shoulders, an emphasized bust and hips, and a tightly shaped waist changed the outline of fashionable dress. Full, longer skirts became its most famous feature, although narrower lines also appeared. The Bar suit and Chérie dress show how cut and internal support built the silhouette. Its generous use of fabric provoked criticism in Britain, where rationing continued.
