About Hippie
Hippie dress emerged from the late-sixties counterculture and made personal combinations more important than following a single fashionable uniform. Wearers mixed older clothes, handmade details and garments inspired by traditions beyond Europe and North America. Loose dresses, flared trousers and richly patterned textiles helped distinguish the look from earlier streamlined youth fashion. Designers adapted this varied visual language into expensive clothing too, so a museum example may show a couture interpretation rather than something worn at a festival.
