Seattle’s music scene gave worn layers and unpolished combinations cultural force. Marc Jacobs’s Perry Ellis collection marked their controversial translation onto the runway.

Grunge emerged through Seattle’s music scene and secondhand wardrobes: flannel, worn denim, roomy layers, boots and dresses mixed with rugged pieces. Marc Jacobs translated that language into luxury for Perry Ellis’s spring/summer 1993 collection, shown in November 1992. The mismatch between thrift-store appearance and designer materials made the runway encounter provocative. A designer example records that translation; it does not encompass the clothing of an entire music community.
