Behind the design

James's Clover Leaf silhouette turns the hem into four unequal lobes that fit within a circle. The Met describes a complex layered structure developed through repeated experiments in geometry and dressmaking. This silk example, given by Josephine Abercrombie, makes the relationship between a small fitted bodice and an expansive sculptural skirt especially visible.
