Behind the design

Large, irregular openings interrupt the broad black surface of this cotton coat. The Met dates it to spring/summer 1983, placing it in Yamamoto’s early Paris period. The loose sleeves and disrupted outline show why his work unsettled expectations of a polished, body-defining fashion silhouette.
