Behind the design

A long black wool jumper, wide shoulder straps and a hanging waist tie make the space around the body part of the design. RISD dates the tricot Comme des Garçons piece to 1983–84. Its loose, layered appearance gives a quieter view of Kawakubo’s early experimentation than the familiar story of holes and torn edges. The tan top used in the display is not identified as part of this museum record.
