Behind the design
Fragile-looking lace and slashed leather give Highland Rape (fall/winter 1995–96) an unsettling treatment of history. McQueen linked the collection to Scotland’s past, while the Met’s account describes lace cut around its flowers to make irregular edges. These garments were photographed at the V&A’s Savage Beauty exhibition in 2015; the display is not the original runway presentation.
