Behind the design
Poiret's square-necked column dress combines golden pleated sleeves with a densely worked body. The Met links its black-and-gold geometry to the Art Deco vocabulary of the 1925 Paris exposition. Lace and embroidery demonstrate the specialist workmanship supporting the couture house; the recorded materials are silk, glass and cellulose.
